Textile design, explained
Guides
Plain-language guides to textile print design: what a pattern repeat is, how block, half drop and brick repeats differ, how to make a seamless pattern by hand or with AI, and where AI fits in textile and fashion design.
Every guide
From the repeat to the finished print.
The repeat guides draw each layout from one motif and show how to build it by hand and in one step in MYTH. The AI guide follows a print from the first idea to production.

Pattern repeat types
Block, half drop, brick, horizontal, vertical and mirror, each drawn from one motif, with the product each one suits and how repeat size meets fabric width and the printing screen. Read the guide

Half drop repeat
Every other column dropped by half a tile. What it is, how it compares with block and brick, and how to make one in Photoshop or in one step in MYTH. Read the guide

Block repeat
The straight grid, also called full drop or straight repeat: its pros and cons, the visible grid and how to break it, and how to make and check a block tile. Read the guide

Brick repeat

The tools behind the guides
Every plan includes every tool.Glossary
The words, in short.
Terms you meet in print briefs, mill emails and tech packs, each linked to where it is explained.
- Repeat unit
- The tile a print is built from. Copies of it, laid edge to edge, make the pattern on the fabric. Pattern repeat types
- Repeat size
- The width and height of the repeat unit at print size, in centimetres or inches. Repeat size and screens
- Seamless pattern
- A print whose tile repeats with no visible join between copies. How to make one
- Block repeat
- Tiles side by side on a straight grid. Also called a full drop, straight or basic repeat. Block repeat guide
- Half drop repeat
- Every other column of tiles shifted down by half a tile. Half drop guide
- Brick repeat
- Every other row of tiles shifted sideways by half a tile. Also called a half brick. Brick repeat guide
- Mirror repeat
- The tile reflected in every other column and row, so each edge meets its own reflection. Mirror repeats
- All-over print
- A print that covers the whole fabric in a repeat, printed and sold by the metre. Repeats by product
- Placement print
- A design made for one position on a product, such as a T-shirt front or a scarf. It does not repeat. Create Pattern
- Colourway
- One colour version of a print. A design is often offered in several. Colorway
- Colour separation
- Splitting a design into one layer per colour, so each colour can go to its own screen. Colorway
- Rotary screen
- The cylindrical screen of rotary printing. The repeat height has to fit its circumference. Repeat size and screens
- Technical flat
- A flat line drawing of a garment, front and back, that production works from. Real to Sketch
- Tech pack
- The document a factory makes a style from: drawings, measurements, tolerances, materials and construction notes. Tech Pack Reading
